Mark Jenkins (United States)

Peatlands of RIAU, sumatra

Mark Jenkins is an American sculptor and installation artist casting his own body among other objects to alter perceptions of the ordinary and the real.

Marks contribution to the Splash and Burn project focuses primarily on the relationship between the community and the landscape. The toxic haze generated as part of the agricultural clearance method 'Slash and Burn' a is referenced through his life size installs. Smoke escapes their haunting forms as they stand alone among the remnants of a burnt plantation.

We live in a culture now where people are so engrossed in their cell phones and things like that so they don’t really pay attention to surroundings. It almost takes something super surreal, or something that looks like a dead body to get people to stop.
